West Virginia Horse Racing News - Latest Stats, Picks and Stories
While West Virginia had enjoyed legal pari-mutuel racing at horse tracks since the 1930s all out of proportion to the state’s actual population, legislation in 1992 allowed the WV horse racing (and greyhound racing, for now) to flourish as never before.
After this legalization, the four racetracks in West Virginia immediately added slot machines, video poker and other such gambling machines. At about this time, simulcast racing was introduced throughout the state’s tracks – and suddenly these venues were full-on profitable gambling plazas.

Kentucky’s horse racing tracks include:
• Charles Town Races (Ranson, WV) is open real round with all the goodies mentioned above. Live racing is held throughout the year as well three to four times a week. Peak events include the $1.25 million Charles Town Classic and the West Virginia Breeders Classic.
• The Mountaineer Racetrack (Chester, WV). In a location mostly devoted to the casino resort aspect of the place, the Mountaineer’s offerings vis-à-vis racing are limited. In January and February, no live racing is held at all. In the other 10 months of the year, no live racing is held on Wednesdays.
• The Mardi Gras Casino & Resort (Cross Lanes, WV) is host to West Virginia’s bigger, newer and spiffier greyhound racetracks. Five days a week, racing goes off starting at 4:30 pm, but on Saturdays, enthusiasts may enjoy 10 hours’ worth of action.
• Finally, the Wheeling Island Casino Resort was more or less built on the back of the Wheeling greyhound track, one of the oldest continuously running such tracks in the US. The Wheeling is open only on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Fridays, but simulcast racing is available on other days.
